The Wizard and His Purple Beard
The short story originally appeared in the Philadelphia Public Ledger circa 1920 and has since been adapted into comic form as “The Wizard of Pumperdink” in Oz-story 4.
Originally published in the Philadelphia Public Ledger, November 21, 1920. Available in Sissajig and Other Surprises, published by the International Wizard of Oz Club. It is also available on The Hungry Tiger Press website. Click on the title above to read this story there.
This short poem originally appeared in the Philadelphia Public Ledger circa 1920.
This collection of short Ruth Plumly Thompson stories and poems contains along with some very charming early work she had done for various publications, several references to places and personages Thompson later incorporated in Oz (Patch, Sun-Top Mountain, Pumperdink). There are as well several Oz poems and a short Oz play Thompson had written to promote the Oz books.
Note: This prose poem takes place in the Spring. Year placement is my own (based on a poetic notion that the crescent moon can be used as a metaphor for the new Royal Historian the Land of Oz is about to have in Ruth Plumly Thompson).
This story occurs on Betsy Bobbin’s birthday, October 31. The exact year is uncertain, however, and the placement here is my own devising.
The 15th Oz book and the first to be penned by someone other than L. Frank Baum. Early editions attribute portions of this book to Baum to help readers bridge the gap to the new author, however, this work is strictly that of the famous children's author–soon to be Royal Historian–Ruth Plumy Thompson whom Reilly & Lee (with the widow Baum's approval) hired to continue the series after Baum's death.

This third issue of the Ozmapolitan was issued by Reilly & Lee in 1926 to advertise the new Oz book of the year, “The Hungry Tiger of Oz”.
This 1925 cookbook/poem is set in the Oz community of Bunbury. Neither Thompson’s name, nor the illustrator’s (Gertrude Kay) appears on the book.
Mombi’s involvement in the enchantment must place the start of these events at some time before her death in 1923. It is unknown how long following this that this story of the disenchantment occurs. At the least, it must allow for time for the dragon to search out his betrothed and cry a “small stream” of blue stones.
21st Oz book in the original series!

This fourth issue of the Ozmapolitan was issued by Reilly & Lee in 1927 to advertise the new book, “The Gnome King of Oz”.
22nd book in the original Oz series! All the dates within this book regarding the early years of Mombi, Orin/Tattypoo and Cheeriobed are suspect and are most likely erroneous. Likewise, Trot utters that Mombi had been put out two years ago, when in fact it is three.

Fifth issue of the Ozmapolitan was issued by Reilly & Lee in 1928 to advertise the new book, Giant Horse of Oz.
